Twas the Best of Times, Twas the Worst of Times

It is officially my last weekend. The year has come and gone and it is once again Tax Season or rather “Mandy has no life” season. Unfortunately that not only means that I will have no free evenings or Saturdays, but it also means that the blog posts will soon become more few and far between. But lets not rush off too soon here. It is my last weekend of freedom and I intend to live it to the fullest. Beginning of course tonight with a Penthouse outing that has been six years in the making. That’s right I have been living here (southern CA) for six years now, and ever since day one I have wanted to go to Santa Monica Pier. Can you believe I have never gone, a tad bit pathetic really.

The wait is over.

I am quite excited. I have my camera battery fully charged – I am going to delete all of the pictures off the memory card. I just may need all 4 gigs for this monumentus occasion. That’s right you can look for pictures right here tomorrow.

Random fact for the day: Did you know that the Ferris Wheel on Santa Monica Pier is the worlds first and only solar powered Ferris wheel? That’s right it is. The original Ferris Wheel was sold on ebay last year and the solar powered one was put up in its place. Pretty Cool huh.

I really like Ferris Wheels.

Snuggie!

I would like to go ahead and dedicate this post to Cameron, a true Snuggie fan.

Ok people have you seen Snuggies? Please tell me you have seen the commercials. In case you have not I have included on here for you to take a gander. Because really if you do not know what a snuggie is you will not find the humor in any of this.

Over Christmas my family spent a lot of time together – and since nothing really says family bonding like quality TV time we watched a good amount of Television. Which in turn allowed us to familiarize ourselves with the Snuggie as it’s add played at least once if not twice every commercial break. We all became fast fans, however none as dedicated as Cam.

Now today while I was diligently working I stumbled across this article from USA Today. Now I would really recommend you reading it, however I know the likely hood of that is slim so I will give you a few important/hilarious snippets.

According to this article Snuggie love is sweeping the nation. There are numerous facebook groups which support the Snuggie, there many parody videos on youtube, college students have created snuggie drinking games, and my favorite there are snuggie websites which are dedicated to snuggie sightings.

I thought I was a snuggie fan, boy was I wrong.

Stalker Alert

I may have a history of stalking – like actual legit (no I am not crazy – it is actually a funny story) stalking. You know before facebook came around and made basically everyone a stalker. But that was years ago really I have moved on, or so I thought, until yesterday. My stalker like tendency’s came out in full force – without even trying.

As you probably remember last week Ang and I went dancing. One of the comforting things about this awkward situation was that it was at a church we did not attend – with people we did not know. So we kept telling ourselves that it did not matter if we looked like idiots because we would never see those people again. Boy were we wrong.

Last night we went to Wal-Mart to pick up a movie and some candy, as we were checking out we see a little posse of 3 wearing Biola sweatshirts. Upon a closer look we recognize two of the guys as some of our dancing partners. We definitely make semi awkward eye contact –before I quickly averted my glance. Angela and I of course begin to laugh about this and comment on how we were wrong about never seeing those people again.

Then we continue our evening plans which consist of a lovely walk at Biola (yes we have moved past college, it just so happens to be the only available well lit place to walk). Since it was Tuesday the track was closed for Lacrosse practice so we took to walking campus. As we walk between Emerson and Horton who do we see? None other than Dancing/Wal-Mart Posse Boy #1 strolling by carrying his goods from Wolly World. Now this is just too much. I can’t handle it. Really what are the chances we see him again?

We continue our walk in a somewhat shocked state. Around campus we go, down to good ol Hart Hall (the best of all halls) to give Jake a little ring. We pass Hope and are keeping up a good pace, we are almost to Stewart when a bike comes along side us and eventually passes by. Riding the bike was …………….Dancing Boy #3 (not part of the Wal-Mart Posse) another one. AAAAHHHH! Three in one right, REALLY?!?!? This is when I start to feel really old and like a cradle robber thinking about how I danced with all these youngins they probably thought I was part of the Golden Girls cast.

We take a minute to recover – really my heart is not what it used to be, this old age, man one more surprise like this and I may have a heart attack. As we approach the front of Stewart, there sitting out front is Dancing/Wal-Mart Posse Boy #1 Again! Seriously seeing him 3 times within an hour is too too much –I can’t handle it. Never again will I go dancing, ever! Since we were very close to our turn around point I made Ang walk through the parking lot with me, hiding behind the cars, as to avoid the sidewalk and not pass him yet again.

Ugh! Next time you go into a situation thinking you will never see people again, reevaluate.

Jackpot!

Today is the Chinese New Year, perhaps you knew that compliments of the ever changing picture on google.com. I now have a Chinese coworker, and he generously passed out new years gifts to everyone in the office. Call me crazy but I love getting gifts! But this one had me a bit boggled; it was what appeared to be a small red envelope with Chinese writing on the front. Ok maybe not so confusing sounding – but it was it did not feel like there was anything inside of it and I could not find the flap to open it. After a few minutes of intense searching I resorted to the scissors. I cut the top off and what did I find inside? None other than a California Lottery Scratcher.

So is it always a tradition to give scratcher cards on new years? Who knows but I was not gonna complain I as about to win big money.

This was the first time I have ever had the pleasure of scratching, so I made sure to read all of the instructions as I did not want to scratch the wrong part and end up disqualified or something ridiculous like that. I proceeded to scratch off all of the squares of the tic tac toe board. And then I scratched off the prize box. This is when it gets exciting, the prize box contained $200. SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Needless to say I got really excited, jumped out of my desk and start telling everyone that I won $200. Nothing like starting out your week off on a good note. Yahoo!!

A coworker wants to take a gander at my winning card – I gently hand it over keeping a close eye on her, I have to make sure she does not try anything sneaky and try to steal my card. She starts laughing, that is never a good sign, I move in a little closer to see what is so funny. She kindly informed me that I would only win $200 if I had 3 in a row on the tic tac toe board, which I did not. Woops! As I said it was my first scracher experience – I thought that you automatically won whatever was in the prize box. Guess not.

Next time I will not make the same mistake, as I am now educated in the ways of the California Scratchers.

It Happened One Night

I came, I saw I conquered! That’s basically how it went down last night when I learned to swing dance. Yeah, after one night I am practically professional – you can look for me on next season of “So You Think You Can Dance.” I was THAT good! All those who think that was a big whopping lie say I.

I

OK maybe I was not really that skilled, but I did go, that in it of itself was quite a feet. I had a little breakdown upon our arrival (I started to really freak out and told Angela and Sylvan I was going to throw up – I might be a tad bit dramatic) Angela and I tried unsuccessfully to get Sylvan to turn the car around and flee. Thankfully he did not listen to us, because it ended up being quite enjoyable experience, naturally laced with funny/awkward moments. We learned how to do the collegiate shag, which is a version of the fox trot. I am not a naturally gifted dancer nor do I have any sort of rhythm, thus making this quite a challenge, I was by no means the best dancer in the room, but I was not the worst either………………….. I don’t think.

Along with learning the basic dance steps I learned that it is really uncomfortable to dance with guys considerably shorter than you. I know that I am tall and I knew going into it that I would of course have to dance with guys shorter than me, however I did not expect to dance with someone about a foot shorter than me. It was more than a little awkward – and I am sure it looked ridiculous, as Angela could not contain her giggles. But I did it none the less, and the biggest accomplishments of the night I only kicked one of my partners. I think that is worthy of a pat on the back.

I may just be returning next week.
If you need a good laugh, feel free to join us..................Carlos you know you want to.

Going Up

Evidently my time of maturity has passed. Today I was back to my old shenanigans; I had some major issues with the elevator. I started to experience extreme claustrophobia as I was stuck in the elevator for what felt like hours (really it was somewhere between 5 and 10 minutes). Of course I was stuck by myself, there was no one there to commiserate with or talk with to distract myself from the impending doom. Thankfully another worker came to my rescue and let me out.

Here’s what went down. It was exactly 3:38 and I was going down to the lobby to drop the afternoon mail off. Simple enough task. I get in the elevator, the door shuts, I push the button…………..nothing happens. I push the button again………………..still nothing. I ponder my options, and decide the best course of action is to keep pressing the button. I thought there had to be a simple solution – I did not want to admit defeat and push the emergency call button just yet. I had to be smarter than the elevator. So I stood and waited, pushing the button every so often. Still nothing was happening; there was no noise, no movement, no nothing.

Just as I was about to break down into full panic mode and hit the emergency button the doors opened and a man stepped in. I was so stunned that the door was working I was speechless – I was too slow to speak and I was not able to tell him the elevator was not working before the doors closed on us. But wait, he pushed the button marked G and down we went. WHAT?! We were moving just like that. Talk about the magic touch.

This is where I realized that I nearly suffered mass humiliation. All along I had been pushing the 2nd floor button which is the floor I work on, the same floor I entered the elevator on. Imagine that, elevators don’t go down when you don’t push the down button. Wow could I have been any dumber? Thankfully the kind man from the second floor, who saved my life, did not know how long I had been fearfully standing in the elevator. Boy was I thankful I never pushed the emergency button.

New Year New Me Part DOS

That's right the newness just keeps on coming. I don't know what has inspired all of the sudden changes and motivation but they are happening none the less. Tonight Angela informed me that I am a new women. I was evidently acting in ways that were completely out of the norm for me - nothing ridiculous of course because I am the height of discretion. It was simple changes - like whistling at a guy on the street (yeah that's right I really did - but it was someone I knew) and telling a friend I would go dancing with them. I know right can you believe that? I am willingly placing myself in a situation I KNOW I am going to find incredibly awkward and utterly humiliating -but I also know it is something that I have always wanted to do. Finally I have now officially moved beyond college. This has been long overdue, but I have been putting it off as I saw it as an annoyance I did not want to deal with. However in tonight in the spirit of newness, and perhaps from the encouragement of Angela's pro con list I changed my email address. That's right you heard it here first, I will no longer be mooching off of the Biola Bubbs system. As much as I love bubbs, I feel that in order to fully achieve the maturity I spoke of in the last post I must upgrade my email.

I am now a card carrying member of the GMail world, maybe you should add me to your contacts: mandyfloch@gmail.com

New Year, New Me

I don’t know what has happened to me. Nothing really bad or actually blatantly obvious, but I can feel the change. I think it is actually a good thing. I have all of the sudden become way less uncoordinated/clumsy. Maybe you have noticed – I feel like it shows in my latest blog posts, there have been less stories of my crazy incidents. As of the New Year I have not been running into walls and doors, and not have utterly ridiculous things happen to me in the office. I have become dare I say “normal.” I believe it came about around the same time as the New Year. And no I did not make any crazy New Year resolutions to pay better attention to where I walk, or be more careful when changing the toner in the printer – it simply came about on its own. I am going to go ahead and say that it is because I am getting more mature. Seeing as yesterday was my half birthday, I am now a grown up mature 23.5 years old and well lets face it your average 23.5 year old just does not run into walls and doors and spill coffee all over their desk or dripping their lunch down the front of their shirt.

Aaahhh maturity, so this is what it feels like to be an adult.

*Side note, this weekend I had another “grown up” experience. I went to my first movie all by myself (hence the poll last week) It was kind of an empowering experience in an odd way. This is something I have wanted to do for a long time, but been too afraid to do so. I am slowly conquering my fears.

Crazy Temperatures!

Ok just a week and a half ago I was freezing in near zero temperatures up in the Northwest, and now I am back in California, which has apparently forgotten what winter is supposed to feel like. We have been having crazy warm weather like eating outside, having the sun roof open warm weather.

Sunday Angela the Penthouse meteorologist informed me that it was to be in the upper 70's so I dressed accordingly. On my way to church I decided to put her forecast to the test, good thing my car has a thermometer which displays the outside temperature right on my dash. When I turned on my car I was very surprised to see that it said 89 degrees. WOW! It was nice out but I was not buying it, there is not way it was that warm already, I mean it was only 8:45am. I rationalized it by creating this whole theory about how since it was sitting in direct sunlight it was bound to be a little off - but it would of course readjust soon.

5 minutes later upon arrival to church I was even more surprised to see that it now read 91 degrees. After getting out I told Angela all about my thermometer issues and she told me that her car said it was 59, I was not buying that either.

A few hours later I checked it yet again, when I arrived at my grace group around noon. This is when I new there was a real problem ..............113!? There is no possible way, I was very disappointed to realize that there was something wrong with my car, after all it is still pretty new to me. Even though it was a minor issue I knew this was going to throw a major kink in my days as I would never again be able to spout off the outdoor temperature to my peers. SAD!

Then a miraculous thing happened. I looked down at the dash one more time and ........................it said 78. Woops it was right all along I had been looking at the odometer not the thermometer. HA! I got a really good laugh out of this.

Just so you all don't think I am totally crazy here is a picture that shows how I could make such a silly mistake. The miles are listed directly above the temperature. And since I had the trip set to record the miles I had traveled on my current tank of gas - I was low enough that it could have been an accurate although hot temperature.

It's Monday!!!!

Do you know what that means? The Bachelor is on. Yes that is right I admit I watch The Bachelor, I am not ashamed to admit it. In the house I lived in last year one of my favorite times was Monday nights when all six of us girls would gather and watch The Bachelor together. We really like to watch all of the girls cause DRAMA it is very amusing.

This year we have a new home and a new Bachelor.........so our tradition of bachelor bonding time must continue. But this year we don't have all of the ladies of the Kibber to share it with, so Carlos has kindly taken their place. And the best part about watching The Bachelor with Carlos is that he provides snacks!!! He told us that he was going to bring lots of junk food, needless to say we were very excited.

This is Carlos.

This is his idea of junk food.

Shake Rattle and Roll

Maybe you heard on the news, or you yourself felt it but last night we had an earthquake. Thankfully this time I was at home and not at the office, so I did not have to worry about leading everyone out of the building. I just had to take care of myself. Easier said then done.

This earthquake just further affirmed to me that I should not be the emergency coordinator. Seriously people I have like the worst emergency reflexes. I was sitting at my computer (home alone) when the walls start to shake. I think the earthquake was actually over before I realized that it was an earthquake. Woops! Should I have crawled under the kitchen table? Really how big does an earthquake have to be before you need to seek cover?

Since both my roommates were gone at the time of the quake the first thing I asked them when they walked in the door was where they were when the earthquake hit. Like where were you when JFK was assassinated? As if it was nearly that big of a deal. Maybe worth of a “where were you when Anna Nicole Smith died?” Anyways neither of them felt it. I began to wonder if I imagined the whole thing. Since I am so inexperienced when it comes to earthquakes, maybe I was mistaken.

Nope I was not. Saw it on the news. 4.5

RADS

I like to think that I am generally safe, me and my apartment mates, as we have all taken a RADS class. You may be asking yourself what RADS is. I'll help you out it stand for Rape Aggression Defense Systems. Now ever since I took RADS my family likes to make fun of me - they believe that my knowledge of RADS will be no help to me what so ever in an emergency situation. Just because one time I tried to show off my skills on my brothers friend and he took my to the ground (I was so not ready). I kid you not every time I go home someone in my family will bring up the topic of RADS and the conversation will end in laughter.

However today we have a break through.........mom emailed me this video informing me that I do in fact have better self defense skills than these women.

Welcome Welcome Welcome!

I know that I touched on this yesterday, but I did not think one little mention in list of highlights was enough for this great tale:

I left Spokane Sunday evening at 4:52. I was very thankful I was getting out of there before the big storm was set to come in and dump many more inches of snow. Little did I know that the storm was coming in from the west. The unfortunate thing about Spokane is that there are basically no direct fights unless you are coming or going to Seattle, Boisie or Portland - so I had a slight layover in Seattle before heading back down south.

As I said the storm was coming from the West. Seattle was covered in snow and my flight therefore was delayed. My flight was originally to land in LA at 9:40, however do to the delays is was pushed back to an 11:15ish landing. I gave a quick call to Angela, who kindly suggested that she come pick me up from the airport, instead of Sylvan (as the current plan was) becuase he had to work the next day and she did not.

When I finally arrived in LA I speed walked down to the baggage claim and was quite suprised to find that my bags came at at quite and efficient speed. I gave Ang another call and told her I was ready for my curbside pickup. She however had other plans -she told me that traffic was really bad and she was going to park. So me thinking that I am going to be really helpful and meet her in the parking garage (my goal was to make it as quick as painless as possible for her since she was kind enought to get me so late)dashed out the door on a great mission to beat her to the parking garage. As I am booking it down the sidewalk I pass many groups of people, one of which yelled "hey - is that............." thats all I could make out. It's an airport many poepole coming and going not even for a nano second did I think that they shouting was for me.

A minute later I hear my name and as I turn I see a camera flash. I felt like I was on candid camera - they totally fooled me. There was Angela, Tim and Sylvan. YAY!! Minus that fact that it was so late it was really fun to have a little post holiday catch up session in the parking lot of LAX. This was just another reminder to me of how great of friends I have been blessed with. Thanks Guys!

I'm Back!!

You know what they say, "absence makes the heart grow fonder." So is it true? Did you miss me and my misadventures and ramblings about life? Probably not but I am back now officially probably for a great while. I had this amazing Christmas break, I felt like I was back in college because I took some vacation days and had a grand totally of 11 days away from CA.

My days were filled with many adventures and lots good ol fashioned family fun. Instead of giving you a play by play of the whole break (which would naturally take up about 386 pages due to the great about of fun and details I am bound to include) I shall condense into some highlights, lowlights and of course a photo slide show.

Fist off a few details you will need to know to fully understand my Christmas Vacation: The whole fam gathered in Phoenix (Lindsey and Kevin’s house) for Christmas then we all ventured up north to the great expanses of Valleyford, WA (which is conveniently breaking all kinds of records of snow fall this year)

Highlights:
1. got to meet/hold little Gavin lots and lots
2. got to each Christmas sweatroll twice – yum yum!!!
3. played mass amounts of Guitar Hero and other games, scene it, The Office trivia game, mad libs
4. had a baby shower for The Gavinator
5. got to catch up with Melissa
6. hit up a movie
7. watched many hours of TLC (mostly What Not To Wear)
8. forced the fam to watch the Hallmark channel with me (he he they pretended to hate it but deep down Cam I know you LOVED it)
9. I had a welcoming committee waiting for me outside the baggage claim when I arrived back to CA, complete with a hand made sign on the back of a pizza box. Thanks Sylvan, Tim and Angela! The funniest part about this was that they yelled at me and I was completely oblivious to it and walked right by them. He he they had to chase me down the sidewalk.
10. hhhhhhmmm I am sure this were many more highlights but that is all I’ve got for now.

Lowlights:
1. Ok now don’t worry I am not about to say anything bad about my fam or Christmas or anything like that but there were definitely a few low lights. First due to the snow my flight into Spokane was rerouted into Seattle along with 3 other planes. Lets just say I do not handle stressful situations very well, and I wanted to get home not spend the night in the airport. I learned through this that I rely very heavily on my parents – many phone calls to them both later mom got me on a flight through a different airline and I made it home.
2. my luggage was delayed due to the transition, I was without it for a night/part of the next day
3. On the way home I got delayed in Seattle again due to snow and did not arrive back to CA until 11:20pm last night – then had to get up for work today. Man am I tired.
