For the last couple of years Angela has been talking about wanting to go explore the La Brea Tar Pits. We decided it was finally time to take action and check them out. First we made a quick stop at Magnolia Bakery which conveniently opened just a stones throw away from the pits. Rachel was devastated to learn the were all out of Banana pudding, as this is to her the only reason to go to Magnolia.
Now on the the PITS. I must say weather.com informed us that it would be a mere 68 degrees here. I was SO excited for a glimpse of fall weather. HA! They could not have been more wrong. The sun was shinning quite hotly all day, I even walked away with a little burn to remember the day by.
These Mammoths here are setting a depressing scene. The mother mammoth was tragically trapped in the tar pits, her mate and child watch on helplessly. Or so the placard nearby said.
Fun fact: that mammoth (pictured above) moved.........very very very slowly, to the point where we thought our eyes were playing tricks on us, but it did move none the less.
The methane gas that is in the tar......or water.....or ground (not really sure you would have to ask Ang) causes it to bubble up. The first time was saw/heard this occur Angela thought there were creatures living in the murky tarry water.
Thanks to the IPhone Rachel was about to be our own personal tour guide, reading us all the info tar pits wikipedia page. In reference to the post title Lot 91 is the only tar pit that is still actively excavated today.
We rounded out our day with a walk around the LACMA, visiting the lamps, the sculpture garden and the all important gift shop.
