This year I had not been planning on dressing up for Halloween. I was planning on just hanging out with some friends and handing out candy - not in costume. Then it all changed. One person said they were dressing up. Then another said they might dress up. And then Angela informed me that she wanted to dress up. What was I to do now? If half of the people are dressed won't I look silly and unspirited if I don't dress up? Oh my, what a dilemma.
I went to bed last night pondering this great issue. To dress up, or not to dress up. Really the things I have to deal with in my life are so overwhelming. After half an hour of tossing and turning it came to me. The perfect costume idea. It was amazing, really I don't know why I had not come up with it sooner. And the best part is that it is two coinciding costumes - absolutely perfect for Angela and I. In my excitement of discovering a great costume idea I rushed out of bed and into the front room where Angela was so diligently doing homework. Perhaps my storming into the room when she thought I was asleep may not have been entirely smart - as I think I may have alarmed her when she looked up and saw me standing in front of her - not even able to form complete sentences. After I collected my excited thoughts and was able to share the master plan, she joined in my excitement. It really is that great or at least fun.
I realize the downfall of this great costume idea is that there is a very great chance that people will not know what/who we are (Tori, if you are reading this I am counting on you knowing) but that has yet to damper my excitement. It may be one of the most fitting costumes I have ever worn.

School Paper
Remember way back in the summer when I had interns?
Well here they are:

Is that pretty sweet or what? That is a page from the Troy High School Paper. The two page spread listed all the students that participated in the internship program and had about four photos. We got one of those coveted photo spots. I feel pretty special.

Routine
I really like routines, schedules, predictability. I like to know exactly what is going to happen and when. It is a weird obsession and I tend to take it to the extreme, mostly unintentionally. For example I could break down my morning routine for you to the minute because it is exactly the same everyday -I also discovered that I weirdly require my pillow to be facing the same way each night. For some reason when I go to bed it is always turned one way and I have to adjust it to the other.......every night. Why? I don't know, each side is identical.
So this morning I went to leave the house at 7:55am. I picked up my purse and my lunch box and headed for the door. I opened the door and reached to the hook on my left to grab my keys.........and they were not there. Enter my moment of freaking out. My keys are always always on the first hook. I had no idea where to even look for them, I began searching my purse and found nothing. This caused me to freak out even more, I had to take deep breaths to try to calm myself, telling myself it would be ok, I had a spare set of keys. I had no idea where they could be - did I drop them on my way to the apartment? I didn't go anywhere after work. Then I looked up at the hook again and what did I see? My keys hanging from the third hook.
I was so used to having my keys on the first hook that I did not even bother to look on the other ones because I was so sure I never used them. Perhaps I should count to five before I freak out next time - and open my eyes a little more.

The Office
This weekend while hanging out with our friend Sylvan, we began discussing work. Unusual this is not, but in our discussion we found ourselves being quite curious as to what our friends offices looked like. Sylvan then informed us that he had created a drawing of his cubicle for occasion such as this. Today he emailed me the following:
Upon seeing his drawing of his cubicle I was inspired to create one of my own. Many of you have not had the pleasure of seeing my office - I realize that this poorly constructed floor plan drawing could hardly compare to seeing it in person (the building and offices are extremely nice) since this makes it look like it is a ramshackle building.

You can get the general feel for the office at least. And here is a more detailed version of my desk area, aka the lobby:

Code One Emergency Entrapment
Paging all Emergency Coordinators.
After the earthquake incident of 07 I have not had very many situations in which I needed to take action as the Emergency Coordinator. Well aside from the mundane situations such as the light failure. Yesterday though I must say that I earned my stripes. I was faced with an office emergency and I took action.
I was sitting at my desk, doing nothing in particular when I kept hearing an annoying beeping. I figured it was coming from outside and ignored it. After about five minutes of the noise it was beginning to give me a headache so I decided to investigate. I soon found that the beeping was coming from the elevator - as was yelling.
Let's back track for just one second. The elevator had not been working when I arrived yesterday, I put an out of order sign on it called for repair. The repairmen came, fixed the problems and the elevator was working just fine. I even rode in up 3 times just to ensure it was operating up to par. Then the repairmen left and I removed the signs.
It was approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes later that Rico got trapped on the ground floor inside the elevator. Upon discovering Rico trapped inside I as the emergency coordinator jumped into action by calling the repair company, who in turn sent out a Code One Emergency Entrapment page to all repairmen. After about 15 minutes one arrived and released Rico from is place of entrapment.
It proved to be quite the office drama I had to spend more time speaking soothing words to the coworkers who were watching the action than to Rico who was trapped. He was ok, once he knew we called for help - the office mates on the other hand are not. They refuse to use the elevator ever again, or so they claim. I think in a week they will be back to the convenience, either that or we will soon have the most fit office around.

Monday Madness!
In May my office moved into a new building. The building is not persay new new, but it is not old by any means - I think it has been in existance for about 2 and a half years. Evidently it has been two very terrible years - the people residing here before us must have been extremely hard on it. Seriously everything is breaking. About a month ago we had no water for half a day (although I suppose that was not the buildings fault - but the homeless man the turned off our water) last week the lights were having major issues (which finally got fixed this morning) and then today the elevator has decided it needs a vaction and has thus decided to not work at all.
I actually don't use the elevator beeing so fit and fabulous as I am I take the stairs (or maybe I take the stairs becuase the elevator is sooooooooooooo slow I can go up and back down the stairs before the elevator arrives). There are however, some people in our office and building that actually do more or less need to use the elvator, making this a semi big deal. I have already called the repair man and they are on their way - it will be fixed today so I guess it is not the end of the world as we know it. BUT in the mean time I have to deal with all of the concered people. EVERY person that comes into the building feels the need to come into our office and tell me that the elevator is not working. I understand that they want to make sure that it is getting fixed, but really, I put a sign on the elevator that says "out of order please use the stairs." Do they really think that I don't know it is out of order?

It's Raining....Inside?!
This morning I had the pleasure of waking up at 3:30 am. Not on purpose mind you. I slowly woke up and realized that the lower half of my legs were wet. Eeeeewwwww! When I sat up I saw the our friendly leak from last month had returned. They never actually fixed that leak, they made the hole bigger to more effectively drain it - leaving us with a 2 inch opening in our ceiling. And you know funny thing happens when it rains and you have a hole in your ceiling, it leaks.
What you might ask is the proper response to finding out there is a leak above your bed in the middle of the night? I of course was tired to actually deal with the situation, so I put a towel down on the puddle and went back to sleep - doing my best to avoid the puddle. After a while a second towel was added due to the amount of water falling from the sky and finally it got to be so large that I had to add a bowl. Oh my.

Life Behind the Crime Scene Tape
As I neared home last night I caught sight of numerous police cars and fire engines parked on Imperial Hwy. I did my best to think up what could possibly be going down that would need aprox. 25 police cars. Then as I got closer I realized that they were all congregated at my apartment complex! WHAT?! Really? Nothing exciting ever happens here, again I began pondering what could have happened - while I tried to figure out how I was going to actually get home.
The police had blocked off both entrances to our complex and closed all of Imperial Hwy in the two blocks that surrounds it. While rerouting I called Angela to see if she knew what was going down, she was after all inside our apartment, behind the police blockage and miles of crime scene tape. Much to my disappointment she had no idea what was going on. She actually had no idea that anything had happened, she told me that about a half hour before she started hearing helicopters, but really did not think too much about that.
I managed to park on a side street pretty close by and walk up to the apartment - although I had to cross the police line and explain to the officers that I lived there, but I had yet to figure out what was going on. When I got inside I explained the situation to Angela - how every single police officer from both La Habra and Brea must be outside our apartment complex. She later informed me that until she went out and saw the madness for herself did not imagine the vastness of the situation at hand.
I was way to curious for my own good. I had to find out what was going on. So I decided to casually go check the mail, and if I just so happened to walk by the police cars and see what was happening so be it. As I neared the other side of the complex I could see many gawkers lined up inside the fence peering on to the scene - but there were too many of the lined up at the fence for me to see what was happening from 50 feet away. Our neighbors then walked back from the fence so I asked them if they knew what was going on. They informed me that they did not know the details just that there was a dead body, and that the police had shot him. YIKES!
Ok really I have shared with you before how I have a WAY overactive imagination, I always think people are trying to break into the apartment or are out to get me, but really not in my wildest dreams did I think there would be a dead body laying in our parking lot. I mean really we live in La Habra not Compton. So back the the apartment I went to perhaps a little to excitedly inform Angela that she was never going to be able to guess what was happening.
After a few minutes we realized that even though we knew there was a dead body we did not know why or what was really happening so we turned to the news and the Internet. Can you believe that we were sitting in a crime scene and all we could find on the local was news was a storm watch for possible flooding. Really? Could a possible murder not be more important than that?
At this point Angela had to leave for class, she had to tell the police where she was going, and why, but I guess class was an adiquit reason for her to leave. The lifted the crime scene tape and out she went. Three hours later when she returned from class we went out to do a little more investigating for ourselves. Back to the fence with the gawkers we went. Spotlights had been set up and evidence was being collected. Can you believe that the body was still there? CSI so gets it wrong - the body leaves the scene once the coroner arrives and they take some pictures of it. Not so in real life. They put it in a body bag but really hours later it was still just chillin there in the parking lot, beginning its first phases of decomp and rigor.
All that to say that after we figured out that we were in fact safe - we became excited and perhaps morbidly fascinated by the whole thing. Because really how often is there going to be a shooting in you apartment complex? This is a once in a lifetime thing. I was really hoping that the police would go door to door questioning all the residents. But then again perhaps I watch too much CSI and Bones for my own good.
This morning when I left for work everything was back to normal. No police, no news cameras, no flares - it was as if nothing had happened there the night before. Did I imagine the whole thing?
It was real in fact, a man stole someones purse at Sam's club and was chased by an retired sheriff deputy. The car chase ended in our apartment parking lot where the thief was shot and killed and the driver of his truck got away on foot. Here is a link to the news report if you want more details.

Blackout!
I am always the first one to work. If you know me you are probably not surprised since I have issues with being early - too early most of the time. I feel as if I am running late if I arrive on time. But really that is all together not related to today's topic. So as I was saying I was the first one to work today. I unlocked the building and turned off the alarm and walked over to the light switch like I do everyday. (somedays the lights are already on, when the cleaning lady forgets to turn them off, and somedays they are off).
Only this time when I flipped the switches nothing happened. No lights came on. After flipping them up and down for a good 28 seconds I realized that they were not in fact going to magically turn on. I walked across the office to the other panel of light switches and it was the same. No lights were working.
If this is not a clear sign that we should get Columbus Day off I don't know what is.
Lucky for us the electrician was booked full today and can not come asses the situation until tomorrow. He did however explain to me that we have an emergency light timer - you can turn it and the lights will turn on for up to two hours. Thus every two hours the lights turn out - people panic (it is amazing how in the course of two hours people forget that the lights are not working properly) there are screams and people dashing from offices - until I go and turn the dial back to 2 hours.

Griffith Park
Saturday Rachel and I headed out to Griffith Park to enjoy a little bit of fall. It is a travesty that we have to drive nearly an hour reach trees with leaves and not palms - but it was worth it.
After a great picnic we lounged in the shade of the trees enjoying
some time for reading and napping.
Then it was off to the observatory, to see the stars.

Thursday
Yesterday was quite the day, instead of have three separate short posts I give you one, containing three completely non related stories only connected by the fact that they all occurred on Thursday.
1. I drive 11.6 miles to work each day, through the course of which I pass through 27 (no this is not an estimate nor an exaggeration - I counted) stop lights. Usually it takes me about 20 minutes to get to work and 35 to return home. Yesterday however it took much much longer. I hit 25 of those 27 lights red (26 of you count the one I had to sit through twice). Gross!
2. After my long journey home I decided to boost my mood with a little retail the
rapy. I headed over to TJ Maxx across the street from my apartment. As I was browsing the housewares aisles I found a great apothecary jar similar to this one. I very much liked it, I was even contemplating purchasing it. I picked it up of the shelf with the intent of looking at the price tag on the bottom of it. As I picked up the jar the top slid right off and crashed onto the ground. It was humiliatingly loud - like the "everyone stop what you are doing and look up to find the source of that loud noise" loud. And of course the lid shattered into a million tiny little pieces all around me. I had no idea what to do, I was afraid to move for fear of cutting myself on the glass - I am pretty sure everyone in the store was staring at me. Thankfully and employee walked by approximately 2.5 seconds later and grabbed a broom after assessing the situation. Whew! She swept up all the glass , I was free to move, and nearly ran for the door in my attempt to flee the embarrassment. I should not be allowed near breakable things EVER again!

Please please tell me you watched The Office last night. It was amazing and so so so funny. Angela and I were disucssing how cool it would be to be the original couple who did this, not only was there wedding all over the internet for a good week but now they were copied by The Office. Pretty Sweet!

Drought Drought Drought
California is in a drought.
Isn't it always?
I don't really know how extreme it is - I lack knowledge in this specific area. I do however hear radio commercials multiple times a day tell me limit myself to five minute showers and to only water my lawn twice a week.
I don't have a lawn so I guess I can't really help out on that one - but I have discovered a new way that I can help conserve water while at the office. I am on a secret mission as of two minutes ago to figure out who is watering the plants in my office. They need help. Normally I would not say that we over water plants (generally they look like they are closer to the brink of death than life) but as of late I have noticed that a particular plant on my desk is getting greatly over watered. You may be wondering how I can tell it is over watered - besides of coarse that unlike the other plants in the office it looks alive. Here is my oh so scientific method ....... I notice that the plant looks wet, yup that definitely signifies over watering.
The plant is FAKE.
It's plastic - water will do nothing for it.
Think of how much water is being wasted right there.
I may have just saved the state.
Your Welcome.
*side note- whenever I think of drought problems I think about how Biola waters their sidewalks. Do they still do that? When I lived on campus every Tuesday and Thursday morning all the sidewalks from Hart to Hope would be sopping wet. Way to save water guys, I am sure that was completely necessary.

Sweater Love
I LOVE sweaters. Short ones long ones, thick ones, thin ones, 3/4 sleeve ones and long sleeved ones. Perhaps comes from growing up in the frigid northwest winters. Or maybe it is due to the Ingrid Michaelson song in this Old Navy Commercial from a few years ago.
Well whatever the reason I love sweaters and evidently I now love buying them for other people. This picture depicts just that. Grandma and Cameron both clad in sweaters from me. Grandma is awesome because she loves pink about as much as I do - although I choose to call this color Raspberry, because grandma is the raspberry queen. And let me just say Cameron I am glad to see you wearing that sweater it is still one of my favorites!
Happy Day Late Birthday Grandma!!!
Weekend Happenings
This weekend was jam packed full of action.
Here is a little run down on all of the activities I partook in.
1. I babysat this little man for a while on Saturday

2. Sunday I went to church with Jake and Hannah in Dana Point. Jake and I had a little time to kill while Hannah was in a meeting so we headed over to Starbucks, and we ended up getting three drinks for the price of one. I participated in the new instant coffee taste test (side note instant coffee in my opinion is disgusting and therefore it is totally distinguishable) and you get a free drip coffee just for trying to guess which is fresh brewed and which is instant. Then Jake ordered a Marble Macchiato but the made a Carmel one - when the fixed it we got to keep the carmel on. Thus we got two free drinks, it was a pretty sweet deal.
3. After Starbucks we headed down to the harbor and Jake humored me while I checked out all the sail boats - and this amazing pirate ship.
4. Finally we met up with Lindsey Kevin and Gavin for a little Birthday lunch for Jake.

Zero Motivation
Way way back, four months back to be exact I used to work out in the mornings before work. This was back in the days that Rachel Davis was Rachel Simonov and she was a full time resident of the Penthouse. I used to arise at 5:45 am with her and head to the fitness center. I'm not gonna lie it was hard to get out of bed, and I was by no mean wide awake. You may recall this story which depicts one of the many incidents I had in the fitness center. There where even days where I would pretend to sleep through the alarm in hopes that Rachel would decided not to go work out - this trick never worked she would just give me good shake to "wake" me up. But regardless of how hard it was to get up I still did it. Three days a week for about four months, can you say dedicated?
Since I was so dedicated you may be wondering why I stopped. That is a legitimate question with a simple answer. Rachel moved out. With this I discovered I have absolutely zero personal motivation - I am completely dependent on other people. You see two days ago I decided I was going to get back in the swing of things and hit up the fitness center like old times. I set my alarm for the early hour and set out everything I would need for the morning workout and went to bed. I tossed and turned not being able to fall asleep, my thoughts were haunted by the fact that I had to get up early. I was losing motivation fast. Finally I fell asleep, only to awake again at 2am. It was at this time that I decided it was a ludicrous idea to get up early - really why would I want to do that when the alternate is staying in my warm bed? So I changed my alarm and fell back to the restful sleep people who don't get up early to work out get.
With that one failed attempt I lost every ounce of almost motivation I once had. I no longer even have the slight desire to pretend that I may want to someday hit up the fitness center - even at a normal time of day.
